Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you teach complete beginners?

Absolutely; if you've never touched a mic or never even sung outside of your shower before, you are more than welcome. Many of my students start off as people who dream of singing but are too shy to sing in front of their friends. I will work with my students to build their confidence and help them develop a voice that they can be proud of.

Do you teach children?

Yes, I teach children of all ages to sing! Music is a fantastic tool for learning, as well as developing confidence & social skills in young people. Our exciting lessons will ensure that they really enjoy learning to sing with much of the input on the music we cover being chosen by the student. Parents and guardians are more than welcome to sit in the lessons if they wish.

Where are you based?

I teach all my singing lessons from my home studio in Northlands Road, Southampton, SO15 2GZ. Click on the map below to find its location on Google Maps. My flat is the perfect place to sing in a calm relaxed atmosphere, with my own keyboard to accompany you.

What songs will we sing?

This is completely up to you! We can sing any combination of songs that will help build your range, expression, and stamina, alongside any of the songs that you love.

What styles do you teach?

Although much of my experience is based in teaching musical theatre, this is a very broad spectrum as a style and I can help develop skills in many genres such as contemporary, pop, jazz, blues, gospel, country and, of course, musical theatre itself. I can also help with classical music, but if you are looking for a serious classical teacher I would recommend another local teacher for this.

Do I need anything before I start my first lesson?

Not at all; I have all the equipment here that you are more than welcome to use! It may be useful at our first lesson to bring a song that you like to sing so that we can work out what direction to take your lessons in.

So, you teach grades?

Certainly. Should you want to take grades, I can teach through Trinity or ABRSM syllabuses. Many students simply just want to learn because they love to sing, so you don't need to take grades if you don't want to!

Can we arrange group lessons?

Yes. Group lessons are a great way of learning performance skills and we can work particularly well on ensemble and harmony work. The largest groups I teach are groups of 4, please get in touch for more information.

What happens if I can't make a lesson?

That is no problem at all, simply notify me 24 hours before the lesson and I will be more than happy to rearrange! Please note, however, that Singing Lessons Southampton operates a 24 hour cancellation policy, whereby if you cancel within 24 hours of your lesson you will be charged the full lesson fee.

Do you offer gift vouchers?

Yes, call me for more information!

I’m tone deaf and have never even touched an instrument in my entire life, do you think I can learn to sing?

Anyone…and I mean ANYONE can learn to sing. All you need are some detailed structured lessons, some gentle encouragement and of course lots of practice and you’ll be singing away in no time at all!
